FEATURE UNIQUELY AKRON CANTON D avid B Baker is confident the opening of the Drs Nicholas and Dorothy Cummings Center for the History of Psychology next summer will be a great opportunity for both researchers and the general public Thats the really exciting thing for me about this expansion Baker says Were going to create two spaces The research space on the second floor where the archives will be located will have a library and a dedicated research space The first floor will be public space for everybody People can come and learn about the science and practice of psychology in a very educational interactive and enjoyable way I see us as fulfilling a really important mission of both research and public service Baker who earned his doctorate in psychology from Texas A M University is a professor of psychology at the University of Akron and is the Margaret Clark Morgan Executive Director of the center It started really with nothing Baker says of the center which was founded in 1965 as the Archive for the History of American Psychology by two University of Akron professors They had some letterhead and that was about it We have been fond of saying for 50 years that acquisitions are not a problem Material began to arrive and has continued unabated for five decades Psychologists Dr John A Popplestone and Dr Marion White McPherson were part of a national interest group that wanted to promote research into the history of psychology If youre going to do historical research you need primary source materials Baker says They wanted to create a repository for primary source material on psychology When Popplestone retired in 1999 Baker succeeded him At the time the center occupied about 10000 square feet of space in the basement of the Polsky Building The building was acquired by the university and refurbished to house university functions We were in the basement Baker says Needing more space Baker went to work finding a more adequate facility to house the center He was able to acquire a 75000 square foot building that was more on the campus proper The H I S T O R Y O F P S Y C H O L O G Y THE HUMAN Learn more about the Drs Nicholas and Dorothy Cummings Center for the History of Psychology www uakron edu chp facebook com CenterHistoryPsychology @ CCHP_ UA 24 Smart Business Akron Canton October 2015 MUSEUM SET TO OPEN NEXT SUMMER WILL OFFER
