February 2016 Smart Business Akron Canton 23 www facebook com dondrummstudios @ DonDrummStudios www dondrummstudios com www pinterest com dondrummstudios A DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEW One thing that has shaped Drumms career in art is the fact that he has dyslexia It created plenty of challenges when he was in school and had difficulty reading But it gave him freedom in his art A lot of dyslexic people think outside the box Drumm says They dont have the same restrictions and that certainly helps in art because everybody wants to be doing something unique and creative As strong as that desire is to create something that has never been done before and Drumm has been a pioneer in the materials he uses in his art he adds artists tend to build on whats already been done Youre building on the past people from the Renaissance Egypt the Middle East all these things that make our art history he says Were all part of that so were never completely unique Drumm says hes created thousands of pieces of art using many different materials One piece he has become particularly known for is the sunburst I can still remember a professor at Kent told me that one of the hardest shapes to deal with as an art form is a circle because its a complete form in itself he says I started making sunbursts with rays and circle faces We became very well known for that So we have a lot of people who collect sunbursts and some of them are quite large OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS We dont always realize that were being presented with a big opportunity in life at the time its happening This was the case for Drumm when he lost his job at Smith Scherr and McDermott in the late 1950s They said Were not firing you were going to let you go Drumm says I said Whats the difference I was about to get married They said You get fired when youre doing a bad job Youre doing a great job but our accountants said we shouldnt be doing some of the projects were doing We think youre good enough at sculpture and you might make a living at it More than 50 years later it appears they knew what they were talking about
